musical musings
I spotted a meme over on meish.org called musical musings. It entails listing the first random twenty songs to play on your mp3 player. I don’t have an mp3 player proper. But my mobile phone can handle mp3s and I have a handful of tunes tunes on the sd card. So I get to play the game:
- What Holds The World Together by American Music Club.
A lovely song. “The world is held together by the wind that blows through Gena Rowlands’ hair…” - Since I’ve Been Around by The Waifs.
A song about going back to the town where you grew up. The Waifs are from Australia - that should be enough recommendation all by itself.
- Wagon Wheel by the Old Crow Medicine Show.
I saw an interview with this band on TV and the lead singer/fiddle player addressed the female interviewer as “ma’am” throughout, which was rather charming. They are obviously well brought up boys. - Coffee & TV by Blur.
Complete with some rather nice rhythmic guitar that’s fun to play. - Penny Lane by The Beatles.
The Beatles were moderately popular some years ago. - I Can’t Believe You’re In Love With Me by The Hot Club of Cowtown.
That’s officially the best band name ever. - Fade Into You by Mazzy Star.
Ah, now we’re talking. 6/8 time, a bit of slide guitar and Hope Sandoval’s voice. What more could you ask? - Need You So Bad by Fleetwood Mac.
Peter Green was a magical guitarist in his day. - Bryter Layter by Nick Drake.
Whimsical spelling. Hm. Good tune, though. - Northern Sky by Nick Drake.
This one needs to be listened to. - Phantasmagoria in Two by Tim Buckley.
Lovely haunting melody. - Satisfied mind by Jeff Buckley.
Shows off what a good guitarist the younger Buckley was. - Brimful of Asha by Cornershop.
“Everybody needs a bosom for a pillow…” - Wish I Was Skinny by The Boo Radleys.
A rather charming song. I’ve always liked this one. - Devil’s Haircut by Beck.
No idea why I like this one. - Willow Tree by Eliza Carthy.
A good one to sing along to. I’m sure the people sitting next to you on the train would thank you for it. - La Luna En Tu Mirada by Ry Cooder and Manuel Galban.
Two wonderful guitarists. I’d love to know how Ry Cooder gets that resonant tone on his guitar. - Venus As A Boy by Björk.
There are surprisingly few good songs about sex. - No Man’s Jig/Hanoverian Dance/Three Jolly Sheepskins by Eliza Carthy.
Three reels, the first and last being traditional Yorkshire tunes. I defy anyone not to tap their foot when listening to this. - The Swan by Camille Saint-Saëns (played by an unknown cellist).
Does the cello not have the most beautiful sound of all the instruments?

I feel like an idiot…mainly because I have never heard of ANY of these songs…Although I do agree.. The Hot Club of Cowtown is a pretty snazzy band name!

Ah, it’s situations like these that those illegal file sharing networks are made for.
